The 2020 World Council mandated the World Organization to pursue a Pact for the Future of humanity based on three principles: people, planet, and government. The Pact will be the key outcome document of the 2022 World Congress in Daejeon and will define the Strategic Priorities for the Organization 2022 to 2028.
The axes of the Pact (People, Planet, and Government) will be the guiding force on the key themes that UCLG debates, advocates, researches and learns on during the year. The Organization will push for the transformation of the social contract within the framework of the SDGs and through strengthened partnership with the international community, organized civil society through the Town Hall track and the inputs of local leaders and members through the Policy Councils and the Assembly Track.
The Pact for the Future builds on the notion that local and regional governments have a critical role as political actors whose main objective is to safeguard the dreams and aspirations of communities while balancing the needs of current generations with those of generations to come. It will understand equality as the indispensable building block of any sustainable society and will underpin the need for a changed relationship with nature which necessitates renewed governance with trust as indispensable mortar between actors.
The Pact will further need to identify the paths for local governments to promote caring societies ensured by innovative service provision which take into account new essential services powered by strong and accountable governance systems at all levels and from a universal perspective.
